A few reasons why going 'dry' this January might well be worth it.
A few reasons why going 'dry' this January might well be worth it.
Dry January is the UK's one-month booze-free challenge. Save money, feel great and kick off the new year right. Whether you’re looking to improve your health or do it for a good cause, here are the reasons why you should challenge yourself to participate in this annual movement.
If you’re constantly feeling exhausted, then taking a break from alcohol may be a good idea – and that is because drinking disrupts your sleep cycle. When you drink alcohol before bed, you may fall into deep sleep quick. However, as the night goes on, you will spend less time in a less restful stage of sleep and no matter how long you stay in bed, it can still leave you tired the next day. Let your body have a month off alcohol and you’ll find yourself in a better mood, concentration and mental performance.
According to Alcohol Change UK, 58% of participants have actually lost weight after taking part in Dry January last year. To put things into perspective, one margarita may contain 300 calories, while an Aperol can have 245 calories. As you pound drink after drink on a night out, these hidden calories will accumulate! Aside from weight gain, alcohol can also can lead to negative health effects such as the increase risk of breast cancer, heart disease, stroke and liver problems. So, it’s a no-brainer to start January right by going booze-free!
Feeling moody and lethargic after having too much to drink? That is because alcohol is a depressant, which drains your body to work its way through getting rid of toxins. Instead of tending to your hangover, improve your productivity levels by ditching alcohol this month. In fact, this is a perfect way to feel refreshed and stay motivated to stick to your New Year’s resolutions.
Just by going alcohol-free for a few days, you can immediately notice your skin looking and feeling more hydrated. Alcohol is a diuretic, making you lose plenty of skin cell-loving water from your body rapidly. At the same time, it also decreases the body’s production of the antidiuretic hormone which acts on the kidney to reabsorb water. With the lack of fluid in your skin, flaky skin, fine lines and wrinkles will become more visible. All it takes is 3 days to see a positive change in your skin health.
Completing the Dry January challenge would bring about an amazing sense of achievement, but why not also make a difference to others by donating to charity? You can either choose to give what you save or get sponsored and fundraise for your dry month. By donating to Dry January, you are supporting their work to reduce the harm caused by alcohol in the UK.
