Whether you’ve been vegan for years, are new to the lifestyle or are simply looking to try something different, you’re in luck. London is home to some of the world’s most incredible plant-based restaurants, cafés, bakeries and bars, and we’ve put together a list of our favourites.
Arancini Brothers is Sicily via Melbourne with a twist of New Zealand. Known for its one-of-a-kind wheat-free Risotto Balls, this beloved restaurant chain started as a tiny market stall in Brick Lane back in 2009. A decade later and they now have branches in Dalston, Old Street and Kentish Town as well as on the streets in their 1976 Leylan Sherpa: Brian the Van. With the Arancini Brothers Old Street outlet recently adopting a fully vegan menu, you can now choose from a selection of 100% plant-based stews, burgers, salads, wraps and more.
Family owned and operated for over 20 years, Mildred’s is known as a triple threat in the service industry. With a fabulous range of baked goods, sandwiches, burgers, salads, soups and jaw-dropping desserts, you’ll be offered a delicious variety of meals and flavours to suit any time of day. Popular items include the Polish burger with vegan cheese, a side of sweet potato fries with vegan basil mayonnaise and the Persian lemon, almond and pistachio polenta cake with rose petal syrup.
Temple of Seitan - not to be confused with ‘Satan’ - opened January of 2017 and has since made a name for itself with its infamous vegan fried chicken. Similar to Arancini Brothers, owners Rebecca McGuinness and Pat O’Shea started off with a little street-food stall on Brick Lane back in 2016. With word quickly spreading and demand skyrocketing, they were able to open up a store no more than a year later.
Boasting an impressive selection of vegan burgers, wraps, wings, fries and a wonderfully moreish nut-based mac n’ cheese, Temple of Seitan is a culinary experience not to be missed.
With locations in Notting Hill and Shoreditch, Redemption serves up vegan, sugar-free and wheat-free food with an alcohol-free bar - the absolute trifecta. Deemed as one of London’s finest vegan cuisines, Redemption offer a delicious and exciting menu that effortlessly balances nutrition with taste - attracting even the most sceptical meat lovers.
From asparagus black rice risotto and zucchini pasta con pesto to quinoa-stuffed maki rolls, sweetcorn and red pepper pancakes and a full range of raw desserts, owners Catherine Salway and Andrea Waters aim to challenge the convention that healthy food is boring or lacking finesse.
Featured in Vogue as one of the best vegan restaurants in London, Flat Three’s plant-based menu features a wonderful selection of seasonal dishes and vegan drinks, including wines, teas, ferments and house-pressed juices. With a mission to end the all too common misconception that vegan food lacks the taste and variety of its meaty counterparts, Chef Pavel Kanja takes veganism to a whole new level. A few plant-based favourites include aubergine with ssamjang (a type of spicy sauce) and smoked soy, house-made tofu with peas and lovage (a type of herb) and spring kabu with buckwheat and fig leaf.
We’ll end this article the same way we believe all meals should end - with cupcakes. This quaint vegan bakery in Elephant and Castle sell a colourful collection of both sweet and savoury treats. From one-of-a-kind freakshakes to raw, baked and gluten-free unicorn cakes, Cupcakes and Shhht is London’s very own vegan dessert paradise.
