Lily's top tips to get the most of your cleanse!
Have you been interested in carrying out a juice cleanse but just not plucked up the courage? Cleanses are all about re-setting the body, giving you a kick-start to enjoy a healthier and more nourishing lifestyle. Whilst the prospect can seem daunting to newbies, in reality, cleansing is easier than it looks and can be a perfect way to add extra nutrition into the diet whilst feeling happier and healthier all round.
If you’re a novice, then these simple steps can help to ensure that you maximise benefits from your juice cleanse...
It’s important to avoid binging on alcohol, high-fat and sugary salty foods the day before your cleanse. Not only will this lead to a food hangover, but it can also result in an ‘all or nothing’ mentality around food which is never good for optimal health.
Instead, prep yourself by enjoying light and nourishing foods such as steamed salmon with mixed vegetables or one of our PRESS soups. Aim to reduce alcohol intake to at least one to two days beforehand.
You may also like to reduce your caffeine intake so you don’t experience too many withdrawal symptoms when the cleanse starts.
Attending a hard-core HIIT class certainly wouldn’t be the best idea during the cleanse, and would leave you feeling worse for wear. Instead, engage in light physical activity such as walking or light stretches. Some of our top cleansers like to book in a massage which can help to encourage lymph fluids around the body. The lymphatic system is a network of tissues and organs that help rid the body of toxins, waste products and other unwanted materials.
It’s also important to support the mind, for example, some like to engage in mindful meditation and aim for 7-9 hours of sleep per night.
The day after completing the cleanse, opt for fresh fruit and raw or lightly steamed vegetables, with some beans, pulses, brown rice, quinoa, avocado, nuts and seeds. Choose smaller portion sizes to ease yourself into solid foods.
A post-cleanse smoothie could be the perfect option as is it is nourishing and easy to digest. Why not try blending a scoop of Morning Ritual, with frozen avocado and banana with an Easy Green?
Some use the days after the cleanse to try and identify their reactions to certain foods. For example, the cleanse often eliminates potential food intolerances and by carefully re-introducing test foods people can systematically record their symptoms to determine if that particular food really is a suspect food.
